First of all, I must apol\u00ado\u00adgize that I have cho\u00adsen to approach today\u2019s top\u00adic in exact\u00adly the oppo\u00adsi\u00adtion direc\u00adtion as the orga\u00adniz\u00ader may expect. I was asked to say some\u00adthing about \u201cYouth\u2019s Role in the Hong Kong Econ\u00ado\u00admy\u201d, but who am I to tell young peo\u00adple what their role should be in the future. One shall always live his own life and choose his own role. Lis\u00adten to no one, because only you know what is best for you.<\/p>\n
It is indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adal\u00adism that makes Hong Kong such a great city, not col\u00adlec\u00adtivism or social\u00adism. Think\u00ading too much about the Hong Kong econ\u00ado\u00admy will do you no good. There isn\u2019t much you can help. You should think more about your own eco\u00adnom\u00adic sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion. Then your effort may make some changes. <\/p>\n
Dur\u00ading the 60s and 70s of the last cen\u00adtu\u00adry, a lot of refugees came here from the Main\u00adland. They came here not because Hong Kong pro\u00advid\u00aded them a lot of social ben\u00ade\u00adfits but we had rule of law that pro\u00advid\u00aded pro\u00adtec\u00adtion of prop\u00ader\u00adty rights. When peo\u00adple know they can keep what they earned safe\u00adly, they all work very hard. Then the econ\u00ado\u00admy will go well with\u00adout the lead\u00ader\u00adship of great polit\u00adi\u00adcal lead\u00aders. We rely more on self endeav\u00ador than social re-engi\u00adneer\u00ading. In my expe\u00adri\u00adence, eco\u00adnom\u00adic jus\u00adtice can best be won by free men through free enter\u00adprise. Polit\u00adi\u00adcal redis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtions always have side effects which can bring more trou\u00adble to the soci\u00adety.<\/p>\n
The prob\u00adlem of Hong Kong now is that there are too many peo\u00adple think\u00ading about the soci\u00adety instead of their per\u00adson\u00adal inter\u00adest. Solv\u00ading the prob\u00adlem of a soci\u00adety is nev\u00ader easy. Our soci\u00adety is so com\u00adpli\u00adcat\u00aded; there is no sim\u00adple answer for a com\u00adpli\u00adcat\u00aded ques\u00adtion. Human beings have been argu\u00ading for such an answer for hun\u00addred of years, but we still could not reach a con\u00adsen\u00adsus. Putting too much effort into this issue will only cause more dis\u00adputes in our soci\u00adety. So why not spend more effort on per\u00adson\u00adal improve\u00adment?<\/p>\n
The rea\u00adson is sim\u00adple. Find\u00ading a job for one\u00adself is always much eas\u00adi\u00ader than low\u00ader\u00ading the unem\u00adploy\u00adment rate of the whole soci\u00adety. When more and more peo\u00adple in the soci\u00adety found their jobs, the unem\u00adploy\u00adment rate will sure\u00adly be low\u00adered. The his\u00adto\u00adry of Hong Kong shows that our eco\u00adnom\u00adic pros\u00adper\u00adi\u00adty derived main\u00adly from indi\u00advid\u00adual endeav\u00ador rather than polit\u00adi\u00adcal reform. That is why I rarely lis\u00adten to politi\u00adcians or opin\u00adion lead\u00aders. They all have their own agen\u00adda. Beware of them allur\u00ading you to the wrong direc\u00adtion.<\/p>\n
Adam Smith said \u201cIt is not from the benev\u00ado\u00adlence of the butch\u00ader, the brew\u00ader, or the bak\u00ader, that we expect our din\u00adner, but from their regard to their own inter\u00adest. We address our\u00adselves, not to their human\u00adi\u00adty but to their self-love, and nev\u00ader talk to them our own neces\u00adsi\u00adties but to their advan\u00adtages.\u201d There\u00adfore, there is no use to talk to the young peo\u00adple about what role they have to play in the Hong Kong econ\u00ado\u00admy. They might think that it is only the wish\u00adful think\u00ading of the inter\u00adest\u00aded par\u00adties of the adult world, and hence become reluc\u00adtant to accept this kind of opin\u00adion. There\u00adfore, the only thing that can help our young peo\u00adple is to enhance their self aware\u00adness. <\/p>\n
I don\u2019t know if you have heard the sto\u00adry of the Fly\u00ading Dutch\u00adman. It is a Euro\u00adpean leg\u00adend, about a ghost-ship which after leav\u00ading the har\u00adbor could nev\u00ader make port again. It is doomed to sail on and on in the ocean for\u00adev\u00ader. Actu\u00adal\u00adly it is only a fig\u00adu\u00adra\u00adtive speech of our lives. When we leave our moth\u00aders\u2019 wombs, we can nev\u00ader return. We must find our own way, and face the real\u00adi\u00adty. Even for every indi\u00advid\u00adual inci\u00addent, we can only have one chance to choose. For life, there is always one script. You can write the script your\u00adself, but you can nev\u00ader rewrite it. As an old Greek proverb says \u201cOne can nev\u00ader step in the same riv\u00ader twice\u201d, because by the time you step in the riv\u00ader again, the water in the riv\u00ader will not be the same, the fish in the riv\u00ader may have grown big\u00adger, and part of the riv\u00ader bank may have been washed away. We all live once. That makes life so pre\u00adcious to us.<\/p>\n
If a young man real\u00adly wants to lead a great life, there are four impor\u00adtant ques\u00adtions I think he should ask him\u00adself from time to time dur\u00ading dif\u00adfer\u00adent stages of his life, i.e. (i) Who am I? (ii) What is my sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion? (iii) Where do I want to go? (iv) How can I get there? <\/p>\n
For the first ques\u00adtion, you can\u2019t answer it by just repeat\u00ading your name. It has no con\u00adtent. You shall take your\u00adself as an indi\u00advid\u00adual un-iden\u00adti\u00adcal to either one of your par\u00adent. You are their com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion, and there\u00adfore unique. It is your thought, your choice and your deed that deter\u00admine who you are now and who you will be in the future. No one but you your\u00adself can give a mean\u00ading to your life. So blame no one but hold your\u00adself respon\u00adsi\u00adble for it.<\/p>\n
As for the sec\u00adond ques\u00adtion, you shall not just relate it to geo\u00adgraph\u00adi\u00adcal posi\u00adtion. You must know your his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal, polit\u00adi\u00adcal and eco\u00adnom\u00adic sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion before you can have a clear vision of your future. Only then you can eval\u00adu\u00adate your strengths, weak\u00adness\u00ades, oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties and threats, and deter\u00admine where you want to go.<\/p>\n
It is always impor\u00adtant for a young man to have grand aspi\u00adra\u00adtion. Aim\u00ading high can induce one\u2019s poten\u00adtial to a high\u00ader lim\u00adit. No one knows how you can get there, because it is your des\u00adti\u00adna\u00adtion, not oth\u00aders\u2019. There\u00adfore you must find the way your\u00adself. With a des\u00adti\u00adna\u00adtion in mind is just like hav\u00ading a star in the sky. You may nev\u00ader reach it, but it guides you the way.
